Best Steak House (For Locals)  in Buenos Aires: Proper Restaurant

Proper Restaurant is one of the newest addition to the ongoing best steak houses’ list in Buenos Aires (especially in Palermo) along with Don Julio and La Cabrera Parrilla Palermo. It is located in the hippest town, Palermo where all the hipsters, hippies or hip people go. The restaurant screams hipsters with the look of a garage and an open kitchen with wood fired oven.

The food is smaller portion (like tapas). However, the dishes feel effortless but harmonious. We have been to Don Julio and La Cabrera, and they are good. But Proper Restaurant brings something that they don’t have. The former is more of a traditional steak house. Proper restaurant has the youth, the energy, and the personality that Don Julio doesn’t. It is why we selected Proper restaurant the best restaurant in Buenos Aires in Steak category.

Tips:

  • Proper restaurant does not have a sign, and we had a bit of a hard time finding it. So, make sure to turn on your google map before you go.
  • They do not take reservations, and line can be long. So we went there at 8:00PM on dot.

Best Steak House (For Tourist) in Buenos Aires: Don Julio

If you have done enough research, you may have heard of  Don Julio Buenos Aires. It is probably one of the most famous steak house in Palermo. Actually the most popular among Buenos Aires steak house. This best steak house is also located in Palermo, Buenos Aires. It has a long line, so be prepared to wait. But, they give you complimentary sparkling wine while you wait, and the wait doesn’t seem that long. I mean, isn’t already a MUST GO if they serve you free sparkling wine while you wait?

When you order please try Asado de tira. It is my favorite part of the meat. It has a bone in it, but it is so juicy and tender. Because it is where a lot of tourists come, all the staff speak good English and the service is  top notch . Always ask what is their best cut for the day. They will actually show you the meat, and if you chose here you will not go wrong for a great  dinner in Buenos Aires!

OK, so I was debating between La Cabrera and Don Julio  which would be the best steak house in Buenos Aires for tourists, and ended up choosing Don Julio. It is only because Don Julio serves free wine while you are waiting. UGH, YES. Who says no to free alcohol! But I would say La Cabrera is as good as Don Julio (And it takes a  reservation if you not a I-Like-to-Wait-an-Hour kind of guy).

Best Wine Tasting Bar in Buenos Aires: Pain Et Vin

Hands down Pain Et Vin is the best wine tasting bar in Buenos Aires. If you don’t have the time to visit Mendoza for a wine tour, don’t you worry. Elenora from Pain Et Vin will give you the best wine tasting with her excellent knowledge and teaching skills. She is a certified licensed wine expert who knows everything about wine and more specifically Argentine wine. She was   a physical education teacher and her passion for wine has brought her to open a wine tasting/bakery (Elenora’s husband is a baker  who specializes in Sourdough bread) in Palermo, Buenos Aires.

Pain-et-Vin-Buenos-Aires

If you visit Argentina and don’t try their wine, you will be walking down the shame road like Cerci in Game of Thrones. Argentina is known for their Malbec and if you have enough time, you should travel to Mendoza to do a wine tour. But not everybody has  long enough to travel to Mendoza. And Pain et Vin can help you with that situation. Pain et Vin is a perfect place to learn and experience the culture of wine in Argentina. Elenora’s excellent explanation and her depth of knowledge  in wine tasting will not only let you experience Mendoza  but will let you travel all around the world!

Also, the birth story of Pain et Vin was really cute and you can watch the full video below of the story and their passion.

Best Street Food in Buenos Aires: Neustra Parilla

On Sundays, San Telmo becomes a huge street fair where thousands of tourists and locals come to buy souvenirs to antiques. After a long walk, you will probably want some snack or a street food before dinner. You know how late Argentines eat dinner, and everyday I was so hungry around 4PM. Neustra Parilla cured my apetite. It is at the end of the San Telmo market, near the square. You will see a huge line for the Parilla, and you will know why people are waiting for it when you try it. It is one of the best street food in Buenos Aires.

Neustra Parilla Buenos Aires

So, I am saying Neustra Parilla because I have only been to San Telmo, but if you want to try real street food where locals go, you have to go to Street Food at La Feria de Mataderos. It is an hour drive from Buenos Aires, and you can easily find a bus. I did not have enough time to go, but if you do.. skip San Telmo and head to La Feria de Mataderos!

Best Hamburger Restaurant in Buenos Aires: Perez-H

Hamburger has become a thing in Buenos Aires, especially in Palermo neighborhood. Every block, you will find a burger place. It just makes sense in a country that loves meat. There is even a fake Shake Shack that tastes just like Shake Shack! I tried as many burgers as I could  while I was staying in Buenos Aires, and Perez-H was probably the best burger restaurant in Buenos Aires. The staff don’t speak much English and you will not find an English menu, so bring your translator 🙂 I will write another blog post about top 5 burger restaurants in Palermo, Buenos Aires soon!

Best Soul Food Restaurant in Buenos Aires: NOLA

NOLA is an cajun food restaurant which is also in Palermo, Buenos Aires. NOLA is a representation of New Orleans. You don’t have to go to New Orleans to taste the best Gumbo or Sweat Breads. New Orleans Soul food is right in Palermo, Buenos Aires. NOLA is a blend of French, Spanish and Caribbean influenced cuisine that focuses on soul food. Liza who is the chef from NOLA is a born and raised New Orleans native who grew up in the industry. She knows her ins and outs of the cajun recipes. Everything is made from scratch with farm to table ingredients. And for a person who just came back from New Orleans, it truly is as good as New Orleans soul food (Or even Mark says BETTER!).

The concept behind NOLA was bringing simple Southern food to Buenos Aires. And it is a great addition to the growing food culture in Buenos Aires.  You can see our interview with Liza and her passion below. You must try the Gumbo and Sweat Breads!

NOLA Buenos Aires

I am also glad that Buenos Aires food scene is changing with more diverse restaurants. And it starts with NOLA and a few other  restaurants that are trying to diversify the food culture.

The Gayest Restaurant in Buenos Aires: Pride Cafe

WTF does gayest restaurant in Buenos Aires mean? You thought we were just introducing the best restaurant in Buenos Aires? Yes, we are. But Pride Cafe is the best restaurant in a different way. Hidden behind the busy streets of San Telmo, Pride cafe is a gay restaurant that is hetero-friendly. The food is not sublime, but the servers are 🙂  Pride Cafe is on my best restaurant in Buenos Aires list, because it focuses on our gay community! And it is the only restaurant/cafe that is hetero-friendly (which means gay lol).

Pride-Cafe- BUenos Aires Pride-Cafe- BUenos Aires

Take a break at Pride Cafe after a long walk in San Telmo. Go on Sundays where you can explore the street fare and take advantage of the brunch where you will be mingling with lots of gays.

Pride Cafe is excellent to get away from the busy market and relax. Tip: Only Cash.

The Best Gay Bar in Buenos Aires: Pueteo Bar

There are many gay bars and clubs in Buenos Aires, but Pueteo Bar in Palermo is on my top list. Pueteto Bar is the best bar in Buenos Aires, because it is located in the center of Palermo and not hidden somewhere mysterious. It is very easy to find and also safe. Also, it is more relaxing and a chill bar where you can just have a glass of Vodka Soda or whatever you like to drink. Lots of gays will gather after 12:00AM. It is close to the other straight bars, so you can go here and there easily as well.

Pueto Bar

If you think of New York, it is like a smaller version of Industry bar except they do take credit cards lol

Best Korean Restaurant : Yugane

If you write a list of Best restaurants in Buenos Aires, half of the list will be filled with steak houses. That is why I wanted to make a list by category, so you will have a chance to experience Argentinian’s take on other culture’s cuisine. First of all, it is really hard to find a good Asian restaurant in Buenos Aires. I believe it is slowly becoming a foodie country and I was able to try some of the new upcoming Asian restaurants led by adventurous chefs.

Yugane-Buenos-Aires

First is Yugane. It is located in Flores, Buenos Aires. I hear it is dangerous at night, so I would recommend you to GO DURING LUNCH. Yugane is a buffet style and they serve you more than 10 dishes at once where you can try every dishes. Refills are unlimited (it is fixed price). Even the meat. So try to go empty stomach 🙂

It is quite confusing when you arrive, because it looks like it is closed. So interestingly, there is a bell and you have to ring the bell to enter. It is very unusual, but I guess like I said, it is not the safest neighborhood. But, it is a textile zone where lots of clothing shops are lined up. So, you will be able to find some nice cafes and cute clothing shops around the block.

Best South East Asian Restaurant: Sunae Asian Cantina

After a crazy night partying, one thing I always miss is a very good Pho. Pho is the best hang over soup and a  real cure. I truly believe after a bowl of Pho, you will back in a drinking mode. It is not hard to find one in New York, but there was literally one restaurant that looked decent in Buenos Aires. It is called Sunae Asian Cantina and is located in Palermo.

Sunae-Bao-Bun-Buenos-Aires

This is the nearest thing to proper South East Asian food in Buenos Aires. And because of that it is on my best restaurant in Buenos Aires list.

The Only Japanese Ramen Restaurant in Buenos Aires: Fukuro Noodle Bar

I have eaten so many ramen around the world, and my love for ramen will never die. So when I heard there is actually a ramen joint in Buenos Aires, I had to try it (which is called Fukuro Noodle Bar). It is probably the only Japanese ramen focused restaurant in Buenos Aires. The interior is on fleek and the staff are super cool. You could tell this is where all the young kids go out and eat.

Fukuro-Noodle-Bar-Ramen-Buenos-Aires

The food is ok. Personally, I would not go back.  I was not as impressed as i would have hoped. The noodles are more like udon noodles. That was a disappointment as I prefer to have thinner noodles. But ya know, it is a preference. The soup base was rich and thick, and be ready for the spicy ONE. It will put you on fire. I literally was hiccuping non-stop! Am sure this could be better and it was very busy so perhaps i had a bad experience.

Best Indian Restaurant in Buenos Aires: Grand Dabbang

If you are done with Argentine traditional options, try Grand Dabbang. It is an Indian and South American fusion restaurant and I was quite surprised how good it was. Most of the Asian restaurant I listed is missing that 2%. But Grand Dabbang is 100% you go girl!

Best Parilla Restaurant in Buenos Aires: El Paraiso Restaurante

If you get a chance to go to La Bocca, do not go to the restaurants on Magallanese St. They will just rip you off with bad food. Try El Paraiso Restaurante. Right after you get out of Magallanese st, you will find a railroad and on one side, there is a small door that leads to El Paraiso restaurant. It is a Parilla restaurant (ONLY CASH), and it is 1000 times better than the nearby Parilla restaurants.

Best Pizzeria Restaurant in Buenos Aires: Grappa Cantina

Pizza is universal and you will be able to get good pizza in any country, and Buenos Aires is no exception. To be honest, we did not try all of the pizza restaurants in Buenos Aires, so I cannot say this is the best restaurant in Buenos Aires for pizza. But I can tell you that Grappa Cantina was definitely better than some of the pizza parlors I have been all over the world.

They are not mean with the  cheese, and  the thin dough is excellent. What else do you need in a pizza!

Best Chorizo Restaurant in Argentina: EVERYWHERE

Last but least, are you looking for a traditional chorizo? go to any street vendors or a Parilla restaurant (On my list: Neustra Parilla, El Paraiso Restaurante). If you are feeling more millennial, you can also try ChoriX in Palermo. It is a fast casual restaurant where you can have a quick bite!

This is my top 15 list of best restaurants in Buenos Aires by category. I am sure there are as delicious places in Buenos Aires, but for travelers who are only staying for two week – I think this is enough!
