Disclaimer: I have actually stayed and experienced the NYC Soho hotels, except The Mercer hotel and the Crosby Street hotel. It is an objective observation and my review (of course, my personal experience and taste might be affecting the rank as I am a human). I have not stayed at the hotels above $500, but we will definitely update our reviews when we get a chance to stay at the hotel (and maybe change the ranks of the best hotels).

The Crosby Hotel
The Crosby Street Hotel in Soho New York City is my number one choice. Yes, it is over $500 a night and it goes up to $1000 on the peak season, so I did not even dare to stay at the Crosby. However, there is always a reason that is so darn expensive. Our good friend Jim from London always stay here at the Crosby hotel when he visits New York and here is why.
When you travel or go on a vacation, you want to escape the reality. Enjoy the freedom from all the stress and work. You do not want to deal with itineraries and the any kind of hassle. You do not want to go back home exhausted. You want to be back to work fresh, ready and energized. We are not in college or in early 20s where we can backpack and stay at a shared room at a hostel (Yes, we can still do that but for people who work 13 hours a day, just thinking about that exhausts us).
Crosby Street Hotel NYC Is No Doubt Number 1 with the Quality of the Room to Attentive Services/Ammenities
So here is why Crosby hotel is the number one hotel in Soho, NY. Yes, the lobby, the bar is a no brainer that Crosby bar offers the best. But unlike most of the New York hotels, it offers a good size room. It is spacious and floor to ceiling lofty windows makes you feel like you are in the old 70s cool hip Soho loft. Crosby hotel offers 86 rooms and each one of them has their own style and uniqueness. You could see why this is a five star hotel (not like a rusty rundown Waldorf Astoria where only few rooms are really like a five star quality rooms. fyi. under construction for now).
Because of fewer guests in the hotel, even in a busy season the staffs are very attentive and quick. I am not particularily saying other hotels are not attentive, but during busy weekend or season, it takes time for any requests or check in, and that is where 11 Howard, The James hotel and Nomo hotels’ problem lies.
Crosby Street Hotel is on One of the Quietest in Soho Where You Can Actually Have a Relaxing Vacation
Second, Crosby Street hotel NYC provides guest only areas. Most hotels are open to everyone including who is not a guest, so sometimes, even though you pay for the amenities, you cannot enjoy it. For example, the James Hotel Soho has a rooftop pool and a bar and non guests can also use it. So, on the weekends during summer, it can get really crowded. Another example can be 11 Howard hotel bar, Blonde. It is a popular bar and on the weekends after 11:00PM, people start to line up. The hotel doesn’t guarantee you to get in after 10:00PM. Will explain more later. However, Crosby hotel makes sure you get to enjoy it by creating a separate section for guests. It is not secluded from the crowd but the hotel makes sure you will get a seat.
At last, it is already proven in London that Firmdale Hotels are sublime. Crosby hotel is the very first hotel to be opened outside of London from Firmdale Hotels Group. Firmdale Hotels Group is a well established brand with top notch boutique hotels in London.
Crosby Street Hotel NYC is on Crosby St which is probably the one of the quietest street in Soho. So even though you are in the center it feels like a get away. Info below.

11 Howard Hotel
11 Howard hotel in Manhattan is one of the new Soho hotels. There are many boutique hotels in Soho, New York, but 11 Howard hotel probably is the hippest and coolest hotel in Soho right now. The staff, the concierge, the bar and the rooms that overlooking the streets will give you the “wowza!”
11 Howard Hotel in Soho is the Dark Horse of the Boutique Hotel with Full of Fashion People and Stylish Staffs with a Younger Taste
It really gives you the experience of the “I live in Soho Coolness and I-Am-Wearing-Black-Chicness.” Also, the staffs are all very good looking and stylish (I could not take off my eyes off of them. SUURRRYYY). 11 Howard hotel NYC is fashion forward and trendy. You will encounter a lot of say, young fashion people in the hotel. But why is it the second and not the first? Yes, it is great but cannot beat the top notch amenities and quality that the Crosby hotel provides. 11 Howard hotel has 221 rooms and the rooms can be a hit or miss as well.
11 Howard, however, is not a hotel that will charge you unreasonably. It offers around $200 off seasons and $300 peak season. Also, the rooms are well decorated with modern furniture and copper pipes. The loft style room with windows that gives you enough lights will keep you relaxed and happy(depending on the room of course). If you cannot afford the Crosby hotel, but still want to stay in a boutique hotel in Soho, New York, 11 Howard is your choice to go. It is still a new Soho hotel and nothing is rusty or run down. So stay at 11 Howard before it starts go rusty 🙂

The James Hotel
My third choice is James hotel NYC. James hotel Manhattan is on the west side of Soho. If you walk out, you still experience the calm and quietness of Soho with birds singing-a-song, but it can be noisy and the road is busier than other hotels with horrible traffic during the day. I used to work on Broome street and the streets can turn into hell where cars won’t move for an hour, because of the Holland tunnel around the block.
If You Are Looking for A Pool in Soho or Broadly, Manhattan, Go for The James Hotel NYC Because It is One of the Best Roof Top Pool in the City!
However, with excellent James hotel Soho roof top pool during summer and the view are one of the perk of staying at the James hotel. It is bit pricier than 11 Howard hotel and some rooms can be smaller. Also, cause of more than 100 rooms, you will get a hit and miss. So before you check in, make sure you ask for corner suite room. If can’t, insist on a quit room overlooking grand st/Thompson st. Also, ask for a higher room to avoid the traffic noise and northern part of 17th floor as the James hotel pool and rooftop bar can get noisy on weekend nights (unless you will be going out at night).
$300 average for a room with a rooftop pool in Soho is a reasonable luxury that you can get in Manhattan. If you want to experience the luxury relaxing pool during the day, you should try the James hotel NYC! After all, how many people can say I was sunbathing on the rooftop in New York! Info Below.

OK… Now, I will be super subjective here. James hotel Soho Rooftop is probably one of the best rooftop pool in the neighborhood, but in terms of maintenance and service, Trump Soho is slightly better. Trump Soho hotel is few blocks away from the James hotel, and also has an outdoor pool. And from my personal experience, it is a better quality than the James. But for some reason hmmm… I do not want to recommend much. But if you don’t mind the brand of Trump (or actually support him) go try it!
Nomo Hotel
Nomo hotel, once part of Morgans Group Mondrian hotels and now acquired by SBE Groups, was a popular hotel in Soho, NY with all the cool hip fashion people. Don’t get me wrong, it still is. Most of the hotels near Soho New York probably are molded by fashion people and became the chic place to stay and hang. Nomo hotel is one of that cool and hip boutique hotels in New York. My fashion people friends from Korea always stay at the Nomo hotel when they come to New York for work. It is reasonable, and the interior is larger than life, and the rooms are clean and white.
NOMO Hotel = Mondrian Hotel
Nomo Hotel NYC didn’t go through an extreme renovation (or any? renovation) after it was sold by Mondrian hotel. Because of that it still carries the Mondrian hotel vibe. As you enter, you smell this amazing welcoming scent and the furniture makes you feel like you are in Alice in Wonderland. Basically it is a Mondrian hotel with a different name. It is number one in my heart, but objectively the Crosby, Howard and James are better value and quality. That is why it is bumped to forth on the rank. However, if you are always sign up for their newsletter, you will so often get a good promotion!

The Mercer Hotel
Ok. I am throwing The Mercer hotel on the fifth. I have not stayed in the hotel nor my friends, so I have no idea what it is like. But it is probably one of the most famous boutique Soho New York hotels. It is also famous for celebrities’ favorite hotel in town (after Crosby Street hotel). It is only the fifth on the rank because I cannot give an objective review on what it’s like to stay at Mercer hotel. If anyone has stayed in the hotel, I would love to hear your opinion below comment section!
