[Getting Transportation from Cancun Airport to Tulum] RJ Tips

After doing some research on Trip Advisor how to get to Tulum from Cancun Airport made me worry. Advisors were saying the airport is a chaos, too many hustlers and scammers. When I arrived at the airport, I realized it wasn’t the case. There were many travelers arriving, but not a chaos. There were pre-booked drivers waiting for travelers, but not many hustlers. There were hardly any scammers I have noticed. But it is still confusing when you first come to the airport to get to your destination. So we wrote a thorough explanation on how to get to Tulum, Mexico from Cancun International Airport.

It takes about an hour and a half, but our driver was driving really fast. So 1.5 hours to 2 hours

What Is the Best Way to Get to Tulum, Mexico from Cancun Airport?

There are three ways to get to Tulum, Mexico to Cancun airport.

  • Private Shuttle / Super Shuttle
  • ADO Bus
  • Taxi or Rental Car

Private Shuttle

The easiest option is to hire a private shuttle. There will hold a card with your name when you get out of the airport. There are probably 100’s of drivers waiting for you, so be patient to look around your name. We decided to go with Cancun Shuttle, because it had the best review. It costed $70 to get from the airport to Airbnb in Tulum. It was easy and no hassle for me. But if you are a solo traveler, this might be too expensive.

Make sure to open your eyes and find your driver. There are 100s of them and it can be overwhelming

When I arrived at the airport, I saw a big sign of Super Shuttle. The cost for a private shuttle was $80. Also, on get your guide, there is a $35 dollar option which sounds like a great deal. ADO Bus

You can take ADO bus from Cancun Airport to Tulum, Mexico. You can either go direct or transfer at Playa Del Carmen. There are only 6 times a day direct buses, so if that doesn’t work you will have to take the transfer bus. Here is the details on what to get it.

Direct Way

If you are a solo traveler, ADO Bus might be a better option. There are 6 times a day currently. It was only 3 times a day last year. So please go online and check it yourself, because the time table changes pretty often. You can buy it online, but some people say the site only works with Mexican credit card. It costs aroun $200 peso. 

You can still buy it at the airport, and it is rarely full. You will see the counter after you go through immigration and baggage claim. You can ask the lady there for more details. One thing you need to remember is that the counter might not be always open.

Transfer at Play Del Carmen

Because there are only 6 times a day, getting an ADO bus to Tulum might be tricky. You can still get the ADO bus to Playa del Carmen. 

Make sure to note this. After getting of at 5th ave bus terminal at Playa del Carmen, you have to go to another terminal – 20th st. This terminal buses will take you to Tulum. It will cost around $100 peso.
