Must Try Restaurants in Mexico City for Tourists

I organised all the must try restaurants in Mexico city for tourists.

I know this can be tacky, but if you are visiting NYC for the first time you can’t just take your friends to some ice cream shop you like instead of Serendipity or other pastrami place you like than Katz.

So here is all the list of restaurants you have to try as tourists.

If you are looking for taco places or Asian food, you can check my related posts.

Anthropology Museum Street Food

Okay, this is not necessarily a restaurant, but after you see Anthropology museum, you will see 100s of street food.

You can get a fancy Doritos (I didn’t like it though) to crickets (I liked it).

My friend wanted to try to spicy cricket, and it was surprisingly great.

You can find more info on which street all the stalls are located on my related post.

El Pialoadero De Guadalajara

After Anthropology, El Pialoadero De Guadalajara is a popular place to go for lunch.

It is in Juarez, so if you have your accommodation in the area, it will be convenient as well.

They are known for Torta Ahogada, but became famous for their Birria version of Torta Ahogada.

If you don’t want a sit down, there are several famous taco street food like carnitas parque luna

Also the most touristy of touristy Mexican resetaurant is La Casa de Toño. I know many people say it is whatever, but if you are visiting Mexico City for the first time, this is a great entry to CDMX.

Balmori Rooftop

I know this is so random, but this rooftop became famous among Korean travellers cause of their massive octopus.

My friends and I came here twice cause of it.

Not only it is great for drinking in an outdoor setting, but if it rains, the rooftop automatically get covered.

And the octopus only costed around 10 dollars which we all thought it was mad cheap.

We had steak the second time, and it was gorgeous.

I want to add that this neighbourhood (Roma, you can read more about it on my which area to stay in CDMX post)  is very hip and has cute small brunch places.

Madre cafe also has a similar vibe, and on the weekends, there is a huge line.

Helena

If you read my related blog post about which area to stay in Mexico city, you probably know Juarez by now.

It is where a lot of expats and like minded people hang out. So there are many international cuisines.

And few of our New York friends highly recommended Havre 77 , but we gave up cause the waiting was like almost two hours.

Havre 77 line

so we ended up at Helena. tbh, it wasn’t the best, but a great place for Instagram.

I mean the food wasn’t bad nor good. It was just like those mediocre Mexican restaurants that you just immediately forget.

Gin Gin

Gin Gin is a famous bar for Tequila. We probably had like 10 different shots here (which we regretted the next day lol).

The indoors are really cute as well.

Cantina Salón Ríos

Another great place for drinking is Cantina Salon Rios. My Mexican friend who lives in CDMX recommended me.

This street is like an expat street where you will find basic western restaurants like Hooters.

Drinking like I am on a mission.

The food was really good as well.

There are few other bars I have been recommended by my friend. We didn’t have time to go, but  Cultural Center Casa LammLicorería LimantourHanky PankyHandshake Speakeasy (was full so couldn’t go in)Baltra BarTokyo Music Bar are higly recommended.

Churrería El Moro

On the expat street I mentioned, there is a famous Churreria El Moro. They sell churros. It was opened in 1935 as a small stall, and now it has expanded as a franchise.

This is like a place you kind of have to go if you are traveling to Mexico city.

It is tasty, but the best part is that you can see the people making your churros.

Coyoacan Market

It is a market where you can buy all your souvenirs and gifts, but there are also restaurants.

I think it is great after shopping.

We just had tacos, but apparently the market is famous Chicharrón

Also, my friend recommended Cafe El Joracho which is famous for chocolate (nobody went cause we don’t really like chocolate).

Meroma

If you are looking for fine dining, Pujol is the most famous one. But because of its popularity, it is hard to get a reso.

There are other famous ones that is hard to get a reso – Limosneros, Quintonil, Maximo Bistro

Several of my friend recommended Contramar. It is a seafood restaurant.

We ended up going to Meroma

My friend came here before and he loved it. So he took us here.

It was more fusion Mexican and at the time we were sick of having taco, this was perfect.
