This is part of 3rd episode of Taste the World without Leaving London. I realised that if I am going to taste the world, I had to try British food first. So here are some of the restaurants that I visited and loved.

The video only contains few British restaurants, but I will leave few of the restaurants that I loved in London.

Modern British Restaurants London

Here are some of my favourite modern British restaurants in London.

There are some others like Brat, Lyle’s, St. John that I haven’t visited. But I will slowly update the list as I get a chance to visit all the restaurants.

The Jugged Hare

Jugged Hare Barbican was the first modern British restaurant in visited back in 2015.

I wanted to look experienced so I ordered a game bird that I cannot remember the name. I struggled really hard.

Jugged Hare Game Bird was TOO Real for Me

But there was a reason why it was so famous among locals and tourist. Their normal menu like sausage and mash was something I still think of.

The beef pie was also excellent. So what I want to say is stick with the everyday dishes unless you know what you are ordering.

  • Jugged Hare Barbican Opening Time : 11:00AM – 11:00PM

Rochelle Canteen

After jugged Hare, I didn’t learn my lesson. I went to Rochelle Canteen and ordered all kinds of crazy dishes.

From Faggot and Mash to Guinea Fowl pie. But I was genuinely surprised how good it was.

I know it all sounds very unusual, but it was so good I was raving about Rochelle Canteen to my friends for a week.

If you are looking for a modern British restaurant, I would highly recommend Rochelle Canteen. It is not the easiest restaurant to book, but here are some tips below related post.

Hardwood Arms

Hardwood Arms is the only Michelin stared pub in London. I know. A  P.U.B.

I went for my birthday and I was very dubious how good it can be. OMG. I was so wrong.

I can see why Hardwood Arms got a Michelin star and I want to say it was one of the top British restaurants in London. PERIOD.

Hardwood Arms booking is also really hard like Rochelle Canteen, so I made a separate post on how I did it and how to do it.

Traditional English Restaurant London

I know many tradition English restaurants in London are disappearing, but you can still find some great restaurants in East London (Shoreditch / Bethnal Green area).

And here are the list of the restaurants I liked (& didn’t like).

F. Cooke

I visited F. Cooke in 2017 when eating Jellied Eel was a popular thing on Youtube.

Shamelessly I was chasing the clout trying jellied eel. I saw many reaction videos and I was no different. It was not the best dish at F. Cooke.

But what surprised me was the F.Cooke pie and mash.

It tasted like corn beef mixed with spam in a pie. And with the mash, the taste balanced out the saltiness.

Koreans like their spam, so for me, it just made me think this is a great way to eat spam.

G. Kelly

G. Kelly was the second traditional English restaurant in East London I tried.

To be honest, if I had gone to G. Kelly before F. Cooke, I might have had a different thought on Jellied Eels.

G.Kelly’s jellied eel was nothing like F.Cooke. Jellied Eel did not smell and had more meat which was nice.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t think I would be craving Jellied Eel anytime soon, but it was definitely worth a try if you are visiting London.

Pie and Mash at G.Kelly tasted more balanced compared to F.Cooke as well.

For more information on G. Kelly, you can check my related post.

Wetherspoons

I am not sure if I can put Wetherspoons in the traditional English restaurant in London.

But on Tiktok (when I posted Rochelle Canteen), a lot of people told me that Wetherspoons is where you have to go to experience English food.

I never heard of it, but when I looked up on Google, it was everywhere.

It has been around since 1979, and I think at this point we can claim it is tradition English food that is constantly evolving with never-ending menu.

The menu was so extensive but the waiter told me the best thing to order was on the pub menu. I will post the Wetherspoons full menu on a separate post.

This is my top British restaurants in London. I would love to know where your favourite British restaurant was below comment. I would love to experience more British food!
